Is this legal? Can I use these thumbnails?
Downloading a thumbnail for personal reference, preview, or research is generally fine. But the thumbnail image itself is still the video creator's copyrighted content — this tool doesn't grant you any reuse rights, so using someone else's thumbnail in your own published work without permission can raise copyright issues depending on how you use it.
Why isn't the max resolution thumbnail available for some videos?
YouTube only generates a true 1280x720 maxresdefault.jpg (and the 640x480 sddefault.jpg) for videos uploaded at sufficiently high resolution. For older or lower-resolution uploads, YouTube's server returns a tiny 120x90 grey placeholder image at that URL instead of a real thumbnail. This tool checks the actual loaded image dimensions and automatically hides or greys out any resolution that comes back as that placeholder, so you never download a fake result.
Does this work for YouTube Shorts?
Yes. Paste any youtube.com/shorts/ URL and the video ID is extracted the same way as a regular watch URL — the same set of thumbnail resolutions applies.
Do I need the full URL, or just the video ID?
